Preparing People in case of emergency

Indonesia, 29. July 2011

Johanniter start Follow up-Project in Papua, Indonesia.

Already in 2009 the German Federal Foreign Office had supported a project for training the vulnerable population of Papua in disaster preparedness and first aid. On 15th July started a follow-up-project with a similar aim: 3.000 people will be trained in 18 months, but there will be some additional activities like
establishing 15 collecting points, set up 15 emergency committees, so called Team Siaga, and conducting simulation exercises in order to prepare the Teams Siaga for their responsibility
and the communities for the case of a natural disaster. The emergency committees are trained after Sphere-standards and in the two weeks lasting trainings they will develop their own strategies, how to cope with an emergency situation.
The project region is the coastal area in the West of Jayapura and the island Yapen, which is prone to not only Tsunamis due to their geographical situation on the open Pacific, but also to earthquakes and floods.

The project will be conducted in cooperation with Johanniter´s partner organization YAPMI and is again funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
